Database UoM
The Problem

Managing databases is a full-time job. Tools for managing databases are specific to the type of database. Microsoft's SQL Server has a suite of UI and command line tools to manage. Each version of SQL Server has a different set of tools. Managing databases across different machines is tedious.

With Database UoM (Unit of Management), administrators have a single consistent interface for managing databases across different vendors and different machines.

Features & Benefits
  • Deployable: Consolidating databases across different machines can reduce in better CPU utilization and reduced licensing costs. With Database UoM, administrators can easily consolidate databases and associated user logins to provide for a smooth transition between servers.
Databases can also be moved to another server to dissipate load on a server making applications more responsive.
  • Diagnosible: The Database UoM allows comprehensive view of issues across different servers and instances. Using performance statistics provided by SQL Server and visually seeing the effects across different units of management, administrators can easily figure out cause and effect for issues.
  • Documentable: Any change to the configuration is automatically captured and stored in a change database. When administrators use DWITA Coordinating IT to make changes, they can annotate the change with comments. This provides change tracking and auditing and helps with troubleshooting.
  • Disaster-recoverable: DWITA's approach to disaster-recovery is to minimize the time required to recover from disasters. Using log shipping, a warm-standby is available to quickly restore services on another machine.
